Context of Job:

The Tanis Lab ( in the Department of Biological Sciences ( at the University of Delaware is seeking a limited term researcher. Under the supervision of Dr. Tanis the limited term researcher will conduct experiments to support lab research and assist with lab management duties such as ordering, inventory and ensuring compliance with university policies. This NIH funded position offers the opportunity for motivated candidates to gain technical skills in a growing lab at UD.

Major Responsibilities: 

• Plan and conduct experiments using C. elegans that require an understanding of genetics; perform microscopy experiments; analyze data and interpret results
• Operate laboratory equipment such as light microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, pH meter, spectrophotometer, and gel documentation system
• Learn new techniques, take initiative, and pivot when research priorities change
• Provide technical assistance to others in the lab as needed.
• Maintain laboratory databases, monitor inventory levels, and order supplies in accordance with established policies
• Comply with Department of Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA, and biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents; promote workplace safety
• Oversee undergraduate students responsible for media preparation, plate pouring and common lab solutions
• Participate in laboratory meetings and present scientific projects at local meetings


A strong interest in basic biological research and demonstrated organizational abilities is necessary. The preferred candidate will have a BS or MS in Biology or a related field. Candidates with experience working in a laboratory on an independent research project using microscopy and/or molecular techniques are encouraged to apply. The candidate is expected to have knowledge of standard genetics and cell biology principles as well as knowledge of basic laboratory equipment operation.

Additionally, the preferred candidate should have excellent organization skills, written and oral communication skills, and skill working with Microsoft software. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment, help to create and maintain a positive and supportive laboratory environment, and be enthusiastic about learning new techniques.

Environmental/Occupational Exposures: 

• Work environment may include working in a cold room for short periods of time.
• Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

Special Requirements: 

• Without assistance, must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
• Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
• The ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials.
• On occasion be able to work various or long hours due to experiment timing
